Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I'm using Ag Leader equipment but we wanted to make accurate boundaries that hopefully can be used for several years.
We just used the planting tractor itself rather than move the equipment to my Ranger. The equipment was already there so there so no moving was necessary. It is mounted on the cab so there is good reception. It did seem like a bit of overkill, driving the tractor around each field with no implement behind but it worked fine. Due to an open Winter, my Great Nephew was able to create the Boundaries while the ground was still frozen early one Spring.
With the Ag Leader system at least, the operator has the option of inputting setup offsets that are temporary and just used for the Boundary making process.
Since our planting tractor has front duals, it was desirable to drive around the fields with the outer edge of the left outside front dual on the Boundary. As part of the Boundary making process, the Ag Leader InCommand 1200 allows one to enter in a left/right and a fore/aft offset if desired. We measured the distance from the outer edge of the front duals to the center of the tractor and entered that as the left offset. We also measured the distance from the front dual to the GPS antenna and entered that as a fore offset.
That meant that the operator could drive around the area with the left front dual as the marking point, Even though the GPS antenna was further to the right and back of the front dual, the boundary was created as desired. This worked very well.
Other controllers may not have this offset for Boundary capability. With those it may be necessary to purposely enter in a temporary offset for making boundaries where it is not possible to straddle the desired Boundary path. Some have suggested making a bracket so the GPS is physically mounted in a different location just for the Boundary making process. Although that should work, it seems unnecessary by utilizing offsets.
