The question I would ask is, does the the even distribution of rain fall over the growing season matter at all. I do not know the answer to that question. I would say that USDA does not think it does.
You are correct this year was not record dry. Most of Illinois had above normal July rainfall. Mine was 175% of normal. Here we came in to July with May and June rainfall about 60% of normal.
August at 30% of normal. I think the April planted Corn and beans are going to be very good. May planted I would think could be trimmed back a little. Here we started with a very dry soil profile, not
sure how much that matters. Also starting that map on August 1-7AM looks much drier. July 29-31 rainfall here made the crop we have. Maybe that should count as August rain, but if I do that my July rainfall is low. August temps in Illinois were normal according to NOAA with extremes on both ends.
