A system’s sensitivity to overcharge is dependent on if it has an orifice tube or an expansion valve.

Orifice tube is very sensitive to overcharge because too much refrigerant in the system prevents the low side pressure (and thereby evaporator temp) from pulling down low enough.

An expansion valve system is still sensitive to overcharge but it takes enough to really run the head pressure up to make a big difference by dropping the efficiency of the whole system and finally raising the low side pressure (temp) as it gets severely overcharged.

I second cutting off the heater hose connections to the cab. Needle nose vise grips wrapped with tape work really good.

Does the performance of the AC have a relationship to the coolant temp gauge?
