| My previous combine was a 1992 JD 9600 which was the largest JD made when it was new. My current combine is a 2004 JD 9560, it has slightly more capacity than the 9600 and was the smallest JD made at the time. JD no longer makes a combine that small. I paid more for a used 625F head than I could have bought a similar condition 630F or 635F head due to supply and demand. Getting a 30 or 35 ft head around my farmstead and fields would be a challenge. I did buy a new Kinze 8/16 planter a few years ago because used were nearly the price of new. I have a JD 9320 tractor as it was cheap horse power but it's a clumsy beast. When I bought it I looked up the cost of a replacement engine and transmission and each was around $45k. I'm afraid to look up today's prices. Last time I was in my Deere dealers shop there was an S780 getting a new engine under warranty and I was told the cost would be around $100K. Worst thing was that they were waiting for Deere to build the replacement engine. Even if the big used combine was relatively cheap a replacement engine would be a huge hit to my farm. It's just a fact that the large farms that buy new equipment buy big equipment so that's what becomes available on the used market the next time they upgrade. Small farms need to buy new, pay a premium for smaller used, or adapt to the large equipment. | |
