Could very easily been a man lift or maybe a telehandler to get stuff up on the roof, know lots of small contractors that do excellent work but would probably only need a telehandler a couple of weeks of of the year for a small handful of jobs on that case especially with the Amish would be cheaper/easier than owning one.
