Baby Robin - 9/17/2024 11:00
Jdel - 9/17/2024 06:29 I only give mine a few lbs of grain to encourage them to come to the barn. I work, out of town, three days in three off. They usually just get grain on my first and third days off. So two out of six days. If yours are in a routine of getting grain every day at the same time skipping a weekend might be a problem. As far as everyone saying cows don’t need grain I agree. However corn is pretty darn cheap right now.
I’ll be odd man out “here” with you. A few buckets of grain a week is piddly in terms of hired help/finding “cattle smart” help when chit has to get done when it needs done. If the “feeding” trains you to a schedule of checking for eyes, listening for coughs, bringing out mineral, and helping your cattle understand “humans” …. Then so much the better. Avoiding a few Casey’s quick lunches a week pays for quite a few buckets of feed.

You can easily pay for a couple pounds of corn/ddgs by skipping the lick tubs that lots of guys (even in this thread) like to use.     Couple pounds of grain goes a long ways for extending grazing on worn out/low quality pasture without losing condition.

A side benefit is that your cows (& calves) get trained to come to the bunk and get used to being around people.    I really like seeing the calves get in beside their momma trying to get some grain for themselves.
