Central SD | My response to op was in reference to fact the heifer was nursing on her mother. In a small herd where all the cows run in one pasture I don’t think it’s same as two unrelated cows nursing each other. I don’t disagree with you the fact this is a heritable trait. The metal crown anti nursing rings are effective. I can’t fix bad feet, poor disposition, poor mothering ability, or poor fertility.
This is is very likely to get worse in the beef business as genetic selection favors numeric superiority and consecutive generations of et. The beef business is being pushed down a pathway run by people that haver never owned or managed cows. | |
