I don't have Venmo either, but I have seen or know people that use it. Apparently you can transfer money between friends (or enemies) and business (legal or otherwise) for things that used to be paid in cash through your phone with a Venmo account address without a credit card reader.  

  They are just a middle man I think.  I think Paypal and Venmo are the same people.
