NW Ohio, near Findlay | agree with John, it is easier to build a new pond and fill in the old one, been there, done that, but hard to convince the owners.
Has the original poster commented on anything? Is it in a small area as to fences, property lines, house close, creek near it, what kind of soil, and need pictures? Not enough information to make a good call. But no way would I even think about fixing that small of pond, can't even get a dozer in the bottom of it, would be all excavator work. And for your information, I myself have never seen a pond fixed by throwing out bentonite on water, and have fun trying to spread in the bottom on top of a the black silt. Dry dirt, worked into the ground, maybe, but no way in your situation.
The worse type of pond to build is where you can't over dig area, looking for tile just outside of where the dike is. It's strange, but true, the people that have a perfect area to build a pond, don't want one, but the ones that want one, it's not a good spot, ground conditions not good, no clay, tile in the area, no way to fill it, zoning won't allow it, and neighbors that don't like a pond, water dangerous for local kids.
EDIT Without any other info, the only way I would suggest doing that would hire a contractor with a good size excavator, and has had experience digging ponds. Clean it out, haul junk out with truck, make it deeper if possible if no rock in area. If rock is close, has to have compacted dirt over bedrock at least 2 feet of deep.
Would have to rearrange the dirt on sides and bottom to make sure no sand or voids from the tree roots. And finally get a vibratory roller for compaction.
If someone wants to try and fix it with only a dozer, no compaction equipment, forget it, Nothing worse than a dozer pond with no compaction. Email good if ever want to talk.
Suggest, fill it in and start over, would be cheaper.
