I'm finding that Tesla chargers are replacing the regular charger. Where there was once a J-1772 (non-Tesla) many of these have now been replaced by Tesla chargers, making it more difficult to get a charge if you don't own a Tesla.
this seems to me like anti-competitive behavior by Tesla, which I believe is illegal, or should be.
NACS (North American Charging Standard), also known as the Tesla plug, has become the standard plug here in the States. All manufacturers are switching to that plug in '25. Several manufacturers have agreements with Tesla to use the Supercharger network, but all non-Tesla chargers will be switching to NACS and older non-Tesla EVs will need to use an adapter. But let's face it, there really aren't that many non-Tesla EVs out there in the grand scheme of things.
There is no anti-competitive stuff going on with Tesla. Musk recognized very early on that providing strong charging infrastructure would be required to sell EVs. If anything, it was more anti-competitive in the past when the chargers were Tesla only. They are now being opened up to other brands.
The fact that other chargers are being replaced by Superchargers is just indicative of how horrible those networks are. They receive government subsidies to build and install chargers, then ignore them and refuse to repair or update them. Volkswagen was forced to create and install a charger network (and I cannot recall the brand name right now) as part of their Clean Air Act settlement, but typical of the government, the only requirement was to build and install the chargers. There was no language to require upkeep! From what I learned about the situation, almost ALL of those chargers are broken and nobody has any plans to do anything more with them.
I have seen on here in the past, arguments against EVs because there are not enough chargers out there to get around. That is still true in many rural areas away from the major highways that Superchargers usually are built along. This is the first time I have seen someone complain that there are too many Superchargers though! I guess it is impossible to please everyone. |
