I have found that an ordinary paper clip will reach into an ear canal and drag wax out. It's curved on the end so there's no chance of poking anything sharp in there and causing damage. I did do the hot olive oil deal one time when I had an ear plugged up and after 5 minutes it softened the crud up enough that it did flush out. What an ugly mess that was!
