Our Golden Delicious tree looked like it was going to break like yours, it was so loaded this year. We wound up pulling off about half the apples on the heavy branches, and even tied a couple up so they wouldn't break. Some years ago, maybe 10-15, something similar happened to our red apple tree. Some new branches grew out of the split, and those branches have green apples on them, the other branches still have red.
