Pittsburg, Kansas | This is a question that has been on my mind for the last few years. After having an A1c of around 7 as a medicated diabetic, it was considered to be well controlled. But it really wasn't.
Going on six years ago my wife and I embarked on a very low carb eating way of life. I was off insulin shots within two weeks and off all diabetic drugs within the next few months. Since then my A1c has been in the 5.8-6.0 range. I would like it lower, but do not want to go back on drugs or insulin.
But I have always wondered the ultimate question, "at what point does high blood sugar actually start doing damage?". What would the average ideal A1c test be? I have watched Bernstein talk about what ideal is, but to get there would require me to take some insulin shots again. I did not want to do that.
But the questions always nagged at me. Here is a video that discusses the ideal A1c. Spoiler alert. It does not tell you, although it does discuss the idea pretty well. For anyone who has also ask what the ideal A1c should be, I think it is worth watching.

I personally would prefer mine to be down around 5.5 at least, lower than my last 5.8.
