That is what I used to do. Found a small town nearby that had a fill station. It would fill my 500 gallon pickup tank in just a couple of minutes from a large overhead tank.

Some years later, I bought a 45 foot moving van trailer (for $3500) and put three 1650 gallon tanks in it with plumbing and a pump. With doors on all sides and a low deck height, it makes a handy seed and fertilizer tender at planting time too.

Using untreated well water is fine, but leaving that in an outdoor tank for weeks or more would likely result in a lot of green slime growing inside the tank.
