RR Valley, ND; MN native | "What did those people do for a living?"
Interesting question... I cannot comment on the unknown ones but for those I do...
Grandma and siblings grew up on a farm in McLeod Co, MN. Parents were immigrants from "Bergenland" in Austria near the Hungary border. She moved to St Paul as a young person and worked as a maid. She married grandpa in 1921 and was a farm wife. Survived the depression and raised chickens and sold eggs and garden stuff for decades to support the family. Passed in 1988 age 90.
The sister had similar background and also worked as a maid in St Paul. Married in 1920, lived in Detroit with her husband who worked in the building trades for a while and later in the Chicago area. I think she worked odd jobs on occasion to help support her family. Passed in 1956 age 60.
The brother here was recorded as digging tile ditches on his WW1 draft card. Later spent 2 summers in Canada as a lumberjack for the season. Married in Minneapolis and moved to Detroit in the 20s for work. Worked in some auto plants as a "grinder" for 20+ yrs and by the later '50s was a plaster/drywall contractor. Passed in 1984 age 85.
Back in those days, folks got dressed up for Church and outings. Almost no pictures of anyone with their work clothes on.
