Pittsburg, Kansas		The Dalmatians were to protect the horses pulling the fire rigs from local dogs.

Dalmatians were raised in the stable with the horses and became attached and protective of their horse buddies.

At least according to a retired career NYC fireman friend. He has owned a couple of the retired dogs and has one now we call L.T. for Lieutenant.
