My drum smoker (old pressure tank) runs all year regardless of temperature. I have a cardboard box i sit over it. It works fine without but will use more fuel. The cardboard works so well it stays on even in summer. Its perfectly safe but thats with my smoker. Welding blanket probably safer but each smoker is different so check yours out at diff temps checking for hot spots
