I was under the impression that the outside chains stretched more because of the extra drag of the load against the walls. So if that's the case, did you buy yours used and someone swapped the aprons? Kind of like rotating tires? As to your question, I would keep the required tension on each chain, regardless of if its ahead of the other.
Middle stretches more
This^^^^^^, at least on chopper boxes if memory serves me correctly, as stated above by Junk Fun and T-boss is best swap side to side , tighten based on slack so that they don't bunch up. Chopper boxes the first 2-3 feet are supposed to be pulled up off the return slides.
My silage trailers always stretched the wall chains more than the center. We’d tighten them until the front shafts were sitting too crooked, then swap chains side to side.
