Did they consider the appreciation on their assets in the last 5 years? I think there were a lot of instances that farmers didn’t make much money unless they changed the value of their assets. Which most don’t.
Not counting land. I could get a return and appreciation on my land without farming it.
Operating assets depreciate. Someone will come here to say their 4020 is still worth what they paid for it, but overall rolling stock and inventories don’t appreciate or even hold their values.
