WC IA | Do 4-h or ffa livestock. I’m not talking the high dollar show animals but affordable “show” animals. Farm buys and feeds the show animals (2 market beef and 6 hogs here). They prepared and showed the animals in local fair only. The money was then invested —some in 529’s. Each started in 4th grade. Two have gone through college and had more than enough to get them through-no debt upon graduation. Unused 529 money has rolled down the line. Now the last one has the extra 529 $$ but is thinking vet school so will need it. Both did internships and worked during college summers. Our “show” animals are animals from local show animal breeders that don’t make their “show” qualifications that are going to sale barn and are bought at a slight premium above sale barn feeder prices. We go into shows with lower expectations but usually do ok and have had a few do well which really makes kids appreciate their work. Then sale day comes and they realize why we do it. | |
