Subject: RE: Planting cover strips/bio striptill

Dayton, IA
I did some acres this fall, so only have experience drilling, no information yet on next growing season. 10 inch drill I plugged every 3rd row. 2 rows winter wheat then a 20 inch gap. Came back and strip tilled in the gap. Soybean stubble going to corn so used winter wheat to hopefully be less aggressive in the spring than rye. I think we used 40 lbs per acre. Wasn’t sure either how to decide rate, just picked a rate and went. We normally use cereal rye at 30-60 lbs on 10 inches. Don’t really have experience with wheat or skip rows so just picked a number.

My long term trials are showing yield loss of rye ahead of corn, 4-10 bu over different growing seasons. With 45z on the horizon I thought this would maybe be a better option to help the corn out but still qualify for some carbon payments. I’m not holding my breath for quick government decisions on carbon and bio fuel programs. I’m sure I’ll have years of research before any decisions are finalized on tax programs!

Edit to add - I have a case ih drill but I assume Deere is the same. Just put plugs on the rows you want to shut off at each tower. I have to shut off the seed sensors on each row that is plugged so the monitor doesn’t beep all day. My rate is determined at the meter under the seed tank and I assume yours is too. When the meter spins, seed comes out at the set rate. The meter is just using numbers you put in for total width of machine and speed and weight so it doesn’t actually know if the seed ends up in all one row or 100 rows. You just run it like normal and decide, with plugs in the tower, how you want it distributed.
