There are dozens or hundreds of those, all over the Web. But what is a "good" Excel spreadsheet?
Most were put together to meet the specific needs of the person who created them and they don't translate well to use by "everybody".
Years ago somebody marketed a full blown small business accounting system based on Excel (or maybe it was Lotus 1-2-3; it was a long time ago). I spent a couple weeks reverse-engineering it to see if I could come up with something more appropriate for agriculture. That didn't happen. Big spreadsheets can be elegant, but are hard to maintain/change/update, and most don't have adequate cell protection so that critical formulas eventually get wrecked. In short, they're not well enough controlled internally to prevent them from going haywire when somebody uses them in a slightly different fashion than the designer intended.
Unless you go for the simplest kind of spreadsheet, well...that's why most of us have left them behind and are always searching for a good piece of accounting software. I'm still on QuickBooks too--but an old 2018 version that we don't update. If I had to switch to online software, my current favorite for something simple (almost minimalist) is ZarMoney. Data entry is simple and reminiscent of QuickBooks. And it's designed to let you drill down from basically everywhere--you can always jump to a related list or transaction, etc., without backing out to a menu. Report details could be better...but for $20 /month it seems rock solid. |
