Eastern NE KS | I'm bored with football so I write...
Kickstarter for discussion with vet:
*Cow Herd
7 vs 8 way blackleg?
Somnus?
Pregnancy virals - Killed or mlv?
If mlv, make sure you understand how to on-board without risk of abortions. (MLV in the cows allows MLV in their nursing calves)
Vibrio-Lepto 5 with or without hardjo bovis?
Gestation lepto booster?
Gestation pregnancy viral booster?
Females (1st calf heifers) vaccination for passing immunity to scours in newborn calves via colostrum.
These are the issues I work with here. My vet says I'm doing more than necessary. But one more pregnancy or one more live calf pays for it all. We had a period of time with late term abortions (4-8%) even after boosting lepto mid gestation under his recommendation. Under vet's recommendation, We pursued PI-BVD hiding in the cow herd, nope, no positive breeding animals.
I added killed viral and hardjo pregnancy antigen to the lepto 5 booster. Contrary to vets recommendation but with his ok. Late term abortions have disappeared but it IS possible that the problem went away on it own. I cannot afford to experiment to find out.
I do not routinely vaccinate cows for pinkeye, footrot or E. Coli. Your vet may have other things to cover.
