I take it you’ve never had a heating element go bad or wire break on a heated waterer at 20 below. That’s a special kind of hell.
That's why in general I prefer a good pond and just chop ice over any waterer. Chop a big hole, feed the hay, check the cows and move on to the next pasture, especially when it is super cold. When a bunch of cows go drink there is plenty of volume in a pond. Any waterer froze over and cows will all need/want to drink when you finally get it going and they don't have enough volume.
Gentleman 10 miles west of me sent me a message last night. He has 2 Cobbetts and agrees they are junk. He will never buy another one. I told him he needs to adjust his water level according to everyone on here that likes them. He said he has tried that and different water level settings and it doesn't matter they still freeze over!
