East of Broken Bow | We have an old IH grinder mixer and have ground quite a bit of hay in it.
First, do you have a hay screen? Highly recommended or it will pull hard and produce powder.
Second, and this is very important. At the end of the auger that feeds the tub from the hammer mill, they come from the factory with a little hanger at the end of that auger. It is there so the auger doesn't 'rattle' but isn't really necessary. Anyway, if you have an owner's manual they will tell you to remove it before you try grinding hay. I strongly agree with that recommendation. Otherwise hay will bunch up against it, and pop the shear bolt in the auger that feeds the tub.
Lastly, I have been told it works best if there is some grain in the tub before you add the hay. The grain kind of keeps things flowing inside the tub so it doesn't bridge or bunch up. We always ground grain first, then added hay so I really can't say what happens if you grind only hay. Most of what we ground was alfalfa, and the drier it was, the better it worked.
Good luck. | |
