coast of Maine | I start up my deep south 92 ford ,7.3 non direct I think they call it ,has the injection pump with lines,no turbo, just hooked up batteries (10 months idle)and it ran perfect as they ever did.I use it to pull a tree off a crushed building, noticed a fuel drip by filter base.I figured o ring old and dry.I changed filter and both top and bottom 0 rings.Started and it ran fine.let it idle and did not go far .Decide to take it for a quick 50 mile cruise ,got about a mile.Just assumed was air.Got a quick tow back to the my shack via tow strap via 5 miles of dirt roads as there was no turning this around in the swamp.Could get no fuel out of main filter supply line.Well must be low on fuel.has two tanks ,put 5 gallon in each.Still no fuel when cranking. These have no manual lift pump.I took the mechanical pump off ,put in a vise.ran lever and zero suction on the inlet but a slight tad of pressure on outlet.I figured what the heck and ordered one off Rock auto as it is no hurry and saved me the drive.
Now how did I changing filter and being mr fix it cause this pump to fail in an hours time?Or is it conceivable I have a fuel switching issue and the it sucked it self to quick dry death?Or am I missing something as far as feeling pump suction when in a vise.?
At the my up home shop I would have other ideas maybe a vac pump on the fuel line to diagnose that part..can this engine run without the mechanical pump sucking and fuel pulled by injection pump ?Would explain the demise of this pump after filter change as a bit of air in injection system..
