| As others stated, most likely yes.
On my 79 with a transplanted 6.9 in it, I added a Dodge style electric fuel pump to combat hard starting when cold, knowing the mechanical pump could be a problem. I unhooked my mechanical pump eventually and just bypassed it.
I put the electric pump back near the transfer case near the level of the fuel tank to make it's life easier. It's been working flawlessly for over a decade now.

Note: There is a screen INSIDE this pump that can clog. Take the top off under the mounting bracket and it's accessible. | |
