Unused wires shouldn't matter as they are not hooked up on the trailer side. Grounds can do goofy things, but you have checked that, are you sure everything is wired correct on the trailer? So the left is turning on with all the brake lights, sounds like wires are crossed on the trailer. Like brake feed for the right is hooked to the turn signal for the left at the light.
