You can check that pump in the vice with a vacuum gauge. If it doesn't hold vacuum after you stop pumping the lever, don't use it. I always check new ones before I install and occasionally find one that don't hold vacuum. They can still work if they leak down but they might not work when the going gets tough. Easier to vapor lock etc.
