Subject: RE: Cobbett 2-3/8" thick ice

SE Wisconsin
We installed two cobetts n our winter feeding area 18 months ago. This is the 2nd winter we have had them. They have 8' tubes in the ground with a float in them. I'd say the water level is 3" from the top? We placed them near buildings to act as windbreaks.

They both have 40 cows and 10-20 calves drinking from them during the winter. I would say they stay open up to about 10 degrees outside temp. When it gets below 10 degrees there may be a thin layer of ice in them. We remove the ice and they are open all day until the next morning if it continues to be sub 10 degrees.
