North Central Illinois
How The Word is Passed by Clint Smith III is a really good recent history piece, though the content is pretty heavy.

The Bomber Mafia by Malcolm Gladwell covers both WWII and aviation/precision bombing history. Also not a happy go lucky listen though.

David and Goliath and Talking to Strangers are also really good, but not really related to the topics you asked about.

I've heard good things about The Splendid and the Vile, but I'm just starting it now so can't give my own recommendation.
