The experience in California is that these high-wind fires can burn through a neighborhood, burn houses down to the slab, and leave trees green and intact in the yards.

With what I've learned about fire behavior in wildland FF training, I'm seriously thinking of ICF construction for our new house. If it's concrete from the joists to the ground, and it has a  steel roof, there's not much left to burn.
