I've heard good things about The Splendid and the Vile, but I'm just starting it now so can't give my own recommendation.


That’s one of my all time favorites. I’ve listened to it once and read it twice.

Recs that I haven’t seen here yet:

In the Kingdom of the Ice by Hampton Sides

The Liberator by Alex Kershaw

Anything David McCullough has written. Mornings on Horseback and The Great Bridge are my favorites

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (historical fiction)

Grant by Ron Chernow. I really admire US Grant. I think a person can learn a lot about not giving up and trying to remain positive by studying Grant’s life.

I also think every man should read Lonesome Dove at least once in their lifetime
