Central Coast, California | My mom grew up right in the middle of where this fire has burned. We have some family friends who still live there. As of yesterday their houses still stand.
I do remember when I was a kid and my grandma still lived on the hill there was a fire that ripped through the neighborhood. I looked it up and it looks like almost the same boundaries. That was 1993.

I am by no means a fan of our state leadership but I really think these fires are just the way our climate and topography and flora interact. In fact many environmentalists would tell you fires are an ecological necessity here.
The San Gabriel mountains where this fire is are steep, rocky and brushy. Fuel load management is not just brush hogging, turning out cows, or cutting down trees. It is going to be a long term commitment to controlled burns and fire hardening of existing structures.
Right now our state has a target of 1 million acres of controlled burns a year. That is 5 times what it was pre 2020.
