3 years of growing it in SE Texas on light soils. First year made good but got ruined by excessive rain at harvest. Second year made about 3-400#, lots of missed positions. Thought it was the record heat. This year got timely rains, grew a 5-6’ tall stalk with lots of missed pods again. Now they say it was cloudy days and dew. Was estimated at 300# but didn’t harvest due to high acid content.
Supposed to be making 1-2000# in Arkansas. At those yields I’d be excited, with our yield history we’re on the fence if we want to try it again.
Both subsequent crops behind it (cotton and corn) yielded better than other rotations. I’d love to get this figured out, just for the rotation benefit.
Was a pretty big deal in AR 10-15 years ago. Told us we could put it on the worst ground, no irrigation and that it would do best. Never tried it. Seemed too good to be true. Haven't seen any planted in years so I guess it didn't turn out so great after all. |
