In my limmited experience, many if the city departments are geared toward structure fires but not grass fires. A city of about 80,000 not far from me will have the occasional grass fire to fight and they make a lot of work out of it but then they mutual aid the smaller departments that are set up for grass fires (4 or 6 wheel drive, nozzles on front of truck, etc) . We have pulled water from a lake for practice but tried to park on the bridge over part of the lake for a real fire and we couldn't get the lift we needed to pump water. Must have been too high up.
We are just like you described, our trucks are 4 wd .
We are not really equipped for structural fires , we will tackle it and hope the full timers show up with the big armor .
We are equipped with nozzles on front of truck also .
We can drive on pavement and spray the ditch too .
I have not driven up a car on fire with someone inside alive . If I’m in charge I’m gonna try to put it out . I’m gonna hope cheif is there and son and the other full timers show up .
I carry a bunch of water , but when I’m done that’s about it . I think I got 1300 gallons . I asked son and he said you can put out a pretty good fire with 500 .
I can’t imagine pulling up and big trees on fire , houses on fire . Then what I have seen fire spreads . Other houses catch .
One of my son’s classes was called what’s called I believe triage (?) he said that’s basically a term to get the worst hurt people first .
As a fellow that’s put out a few fires , I don’t know how they will ever get that done . From my very limited experience it looks almost impossible to contain .
Then the logistics of getting ambulance in and out .
And let’s not forget heavy gear and hot , seems the guys would need to be rotated out .
It looks like a nightmare to me to try to put out .
