Holly Hill, SC | I grew it the last two years. I doubled cropped it after wheat and grew it primarily because of the deer pressure we have. 5 to 10 bu/a beans don't pencil out well in some of our fields. I do not have a pig weed problem so that helps on controlling weeds. First year ended up with 800lbs/acre (disappointed) with a beautiful plant with no major problems throughout the year. For some reason my plants want to abort all the flowers until it blooms at 3' above the ground. Next year (2024) I had a perfect stand with no weeds and a 11 rain following a drought. Any spot in the field that held water for more than 5 days, the plant stem rotted and the plant died. Finished with 90 lbs/acre average.
Quick summary of what I have learned:
JD XP planter used canola plates with shims from Thunder somebody in Canada, Duct tape any gap in meter, use graphite talc (if not static electricity will cause extra seeds to travel around the plate), buy one of the $200 Hy Rate Plus™ LED Seed Sensor (this will let you know what you are doing, and the inspect hopper levels on the other rows), plant in moisture but not too deep. No more than 1", Warrant at planting, Clethodim I think after 6 leaves to take care of grass and volunteer wheat, wait 7 to 10 days and spray Diuron, Diuron will kill small sesame that is why I say spray it after the Clethodim. The sesame will by at varying sizes so be carefull. Some will have 8 leaves and some will have 2. Later in the season when some of the lower leaves start to drop and you happen to see 12 stinkbugs everywhere, spray it with a pyrethroid.
Harvesting you will need a short finger sieve or have to put 1/4" hardware cloth on your top sieve.
