North Central Illinois | I tried the 8 month interval when I first got some dorper crosses 10 years ago. Could get consistent twins in February, half singles in October and quite a few triplets in June. Basically 6 lambs per 2 years. Had to feed high energy feed all year. After a couple cycles I switched to once a year lambing in April. Average of 2.4 lambs per ewe making it to market and I run them on corn stalks and cover crop November - February unless the snow is deep. My feed cost savings exceeds the value of 0.6 lambs per year, not to mention the reduced hassle that comes from only having one 4 week lambing window during a less busy time of year for crop work. | |
