The problem I have always had with Base Saturation is this, lets boil down 2,000,000 lbs of soil per acre/furrow slice into a 1 gram scoop at the lab and then take that calculation and create another which is %Base Saturation. I look at BS as a quick glance of major problems. What most people don't look at is the big picture, Standard Soil tests give us a glimpse of what should be there, but is there a bigger puddle to play in? I started doing Total Soil Digest to look into that and its amazing there is enough nutrients in the soil most of the time, they are just not in "available form".. I use quotes because available form is different for each soil test. What a standard test and total digest allow me to do is realize plant available vs total pool. Once you have that its about figuring out how to affect soil health to make more nutrients plant available.
