Best practice is to engage when you are on the line. Engaging part of the way through a turn will yield poor results.

I would soften the above advice a bit to say wait to engage until your are reasonably close to the line. Engaging part of the way through may yield poor results. I feel this to be true with any assisted or auto steer system - Work with the system rather than against it.

I have an older STX-450 Quad that has a CFX-750 with a Nav II for hydraulic auto steer (not EZ-Steer). It has the auto sense position sensor at the articulation point so it "knows" the amount of angle between the front and rear of the tractor. This works well but can get confused if I engage at a rather severe angles to the desired line. It may jump to the next line or go into a couple of oscillations and then kick out. This happens with a fairly narrow disk ripper if I try to return on the next pass. It does not happen with my 50' field cultivator.

I might be able to improve my situation with some setting changes, but I found that if I just wait to engage until I'm reasonably close to the desired line that it works fine.

I find that I can be rather sloppy with the auto steer on my front wheel assist tractors and engage much earlier although there isn't really much point in doing so.
