The transition can be tough. We have converted a lot of farms that were full tillage for many decades prior, and the soil packed in very tight. Sometimes we run the inline filler to help with that. But you have to be careful to not chase your tail with that either.
Manure is the key for transitioning soils here, it really makes building overall soil health much easier and faster. Also a three crop rotation with something like wheat to break up the corn/bean mix and get a lot of root activity.
