NE Iowa | I tried the winter rye / sudangrass double crop grazing on small patches of tillable land next to my permanent pasture for about 3 years. I had trouble getting the sudangrass to grow in the grazed rye stubble. I think the allopathic effect of the rye hurt the germination. I gave up and seeded these fields to an alfalfa, orchardgrass, and fescue mix. I take one cutting of hay because in late May my permanent pasture is growing so well I don't need more pasture. Then I rotationally graze the second, third, and fourth crop. The alfalfa grows well in the heat of the summer when the permanent pasture goes dormant. No issues with bloat. The key is to never turn them in hungry and have grass in the mix. | |
