Latimer, Iowa (north central)
We have good luck planting short maturity oats for grain, harvesting early July and running through the grain dryer, and immediately planting sorghum sudan with some radishes and turnips, and part of the field to some millet with radishes and turnips. Can turn cattle out about the 10th of September and have left them out till the end of Dec depending on weather. Have the millet to graze when there is the hard frost and prussic acid in the sorghum. Last two years with one head per acre of 650 lbs cattle at turnout, they have averaged over 3 lbs a day for 100 days just eating the cover crops.
