I currently use a 308 as my most used rifle. They vast majority of all shots for deer are under 100 yards. I use a Smith and Wesson MP10 most of the time. A semiauto 308. Its crazy but that thing will shoot 1" groups all the time at 100 yards. And I use the crappiest, cheapest Remington 308 Core lokt rounds. Suppressed and semiauto, makes it fairly quiet and easy shooting gun. Skinny barrel and not considered a high end gun by any means.
Rare to shoot over 150 yards. I set my scopes for 0 at 200 yards for all my deer hunting rifles. That will handle the vast majority shots from 0-300 yards without overthinking it for me and my sons.
Longest shot ever was 436 yards by range finder with a Winchester 270 short mag. I was getting desperate and it was almost dark with light cross wind. In our state we can hunt 30 minutes after sunset. I was younger then and in my early days of deer hunting. Got a little too excited and forgot to adjust properly for distance. Saw it hit just short of his front hoof in the dirt. Next shot was aimed just over the back. Rifle kicked and i didn't see it anymore. Now it was completely dark. I suspected I must of missed and he ran off. I walked up there and to my surprise, there he laid with single chest shot.
I still think I am using the same 308 box of 20 rounds from 4 years ago including sighting in each fall. Last year shot 2 rounds sighting in and 1 shot for the deer.
Look at all the states that require slugs. Almost any rifle will more accurate than a slug. What states are left that remain slug only? I can’t think of any. |
