Here in Mn the southern 1/2 of the state is slug only for deer. We’ve adapted to some pretty nice slug guns and muzzle loaders which don’t have the 400 yard range but impressive beyond 100 yards. I have a 220 savage that suits me fine for small wood lots and field edges.
Figured Minnesota would have adopted some variant of the straight wall rule by now. And yes, the Savage is a tremendous slug gun. I prefer lighter recoiling 20 gauge, little flatter trajectory. If a guy isn’t opposed to spending a little money, there are now muzzleloaders fully capable of a legitimate, not ad copy claim, 300 yard shot. Savage was taking the muzzleloader world by storm 15 years or so ago, with the release of their smokeless MLII. I have one, and don’t use it anymore since iowa adopted straight wall rule, and I now use a big bore revolver or cross bow during our late muzzleloader season. Killed a pile of deer with that rifle though, some at rifle distance, never once needed a follow up shot. I’m thinking of just selling it now, make a space in my cabinet for a gun I can use. For some strange reason, Savage dropped their smokeless line, just when they really had it going for them. Never understood that decision. For a couple years there, Iowas rule for muzzleloaders was pretty loose, just so long as it loaded from the muzzle, no electronic ignition. That paved the way for some very high end custom rifles, which I also have, based on Savage action. It’s a smokeless .338. In the right hands, a deer 600 yards away is in a lot of trouble. Then Iowa DNR changes the rules once again, making .45 cal minimum, rendering this high dollar custom now illegal. Somebody could get a real good buy on that rifle if they lived in a state where it’s legal, as it’s now worthless to me.
