Driftless SW Wisconsin | Leaving the cornstalks standing taller by harvesting higher and not using knife rolls will greatly reduce tire wear. You will still want to use a stomper or hang a heavy bar under the feeder house to get the stalks leaning away from the tire. Knife rolls in Bt stalks can leave a sharp 8" tall spike which is tough to push over with a stomper, sometimes pops back up. This spike is very tough on tires.
Harvesting with head held as high as possible with non-knife rolls (at least on the rows in front of a tire) will reduce tire wear when running on the just harvested stalks.
Tire wear will vary greatly with different corn varieties.
From a residue handling standpoint the longer stalks leave more residue in the air rather than in a thick insulating mat on the ground.
