If you tow a rig with an automatic tranny in neutral very far it can screw up the transmission because of a lack of oil pressure in the transmission. The RV folks sometimes rig up an electric pump to lube the transmission in a towed vehicle. For short trips between farms/home just start the engine and leave the transmission in neutral.
If you can put the transfer case in neutral when the truck is not running then your problem is solved.
